ROMI: is your marketing paying off, and how to calculate it

"Is advertising paying off?" deserves an answer from a formula, not a feeling. ROMI (return on marketing investment) shows how much profit each unit of money spent on marketing brought back. Here is how to calculate ROMI, how it differs from ROI and ROAS and which costs to include.

The formula

ROMI = (profit from marketing − marketing costs) ÷ marketing costs × 100%

The result is more accurate if "profit" means gross profit (revenue minus cost of goods) rather than revenue. Calculating from revenue alone inflates ROMI artificially.

An example (illustrative numbers)

  • Marketing costs: ads $700 + agency $300 = $1,000.
  • Sales from ads: $6,000.
  • A 30% margin → gross profit $1,800.

ROMI = (1,800 − 1,000) ÷ 1,000 × 100% = 80%. Every dollar spent returned 80 cents of net profit.

ROMI vs ROI vs ROAS

MetricWhat it measuresFormula
ROMIReturn on marketing spend(profit − marketing) ÷ marketing
ROIReturn on any investment(profit − investment) ÷ investment
ROASRevenue per unit of ad spendRevenue ÷ ad spend

In the example, ROAS = 6,000 ÷ 700 ≈ 8.6. ROAS looks high but ignores margin and service fees — which is why ROMI is more reliable for decisions.

Which costs to include

  • The ad budget.
  • Specialist or agency fees.
  • Content production: video, design.
  • Tools: CRM and services (the marketing share).

What makes it tricky

  • Long sales cycles — the lead comes this month, payment next month. Match periods correctly.
  • Repeat purchases — customers buy several times; account for them with LTV.
  • Attribution — which sale came from which ad; you need a CRM and UTM tags.

What a good ROMI looks like

A positive ROMI means marketing pays off. But comparing channels matters more than any single number: move budget towards the channel with the higher ROMI. ROMI belongs in your monthly advertising report.

Conclusion

ROMI lets you manage marketing as an investment rather than a cost. Calculate it from gross profit, include every marketing cost and compare channels. The key input is cost per lead — see our CPL guide.
