Shooting Reels on a phone: light, sound and framing
You don't need an expensive camera for Reels that sell — a modern phone is enough. A professional look comes not from gear but from three things: light, sound and framing. Here is how to set up your phone, shoot and quickly edit Reels.
Phone settings
- Format: vertical 9:16, 1080p or 4K.
- Frame rate: 30 fps for normal video, 60 fps for lots of movement.
- Clean the lens — blurry video is often down to this.
- Turn on the grid to frame shots evenly.
- Lock exposure and focus — tap and hold on the face so the light doesn't "jump".
- The main camera is better than the front one — use it where you can.
Light
- Film by a window, facing the window.
- A bright window behind you makes your face dark.
- In the evening, use an inexpensive ring light or softbox.
- Don't mix lamps of different colours.
Sound — the most important part
Viewers forgive an imperfect picture but not bad sound.
- A wireless lavalier mic is the best investment.
- Film in a quiet room with little echo.
- Turn off the air conditioner, street noise and music.
Framing
| Rule | Why |
|---|---|
| Camera at eye level | A natural look |
| Face in the upper third | Room for text and the interface |
| Clear top and bottom | Nothing hides under Instagram's buttons |
| A clean background | Attention stays on you |
Stability
A tripod is the cheapest and most essential piece of gear. For moving shots, use a gimbal or your phone's stabilisation mode.
The shooting process
- Write a script first — Reels script templates help.
- Make a shot list: the main shot and B-roll.
- Record each line 2–3 times.
- Film several videos in one day.
Quick editing
Cut the pauses, add captions, keep music quieter than your voice and aim for 15–45 seconds. For apps, see video editing apps. For the first seconds, see Reels hooks.
Conclusion
Good light, clean sound, a stable shot and a script turn a phone into a studio. Level Marketing's videographers shoot many Reels by exactly these rules.
