Target audience and customer persona: how to define them

"Our audience is women aged 18–45" isn't an audience description. A good customer persona tells you what to say in an ad, who to show it to and where. Here is how to segment your market, build a customer persona and use it in your ads.

Step 1: segmentation

Split the market into groups with similar needs:

  • Demographics: age, gender, income, city.
  • Situation: when the product is needed — for furniture, say: moving into a new flat, renovating, fitting out an office.
  • Behaviour: first or repeat purchase, price-focused or quality-focused.
  • Channel: where people spend their time — Instagram, Telegram, search.

Then pick 1–2 priority segments: the biggest, the most profitable or the easiest to reach.

Step 2: the customer persona

Describe one "typical" customer for each segment. An example (illustrative): an online children's clothing shop.

FieldExample
WhoMalika, 29, Tashkent, two children aged 3 and 6
SituationBuys clothes for the kids every season
PainsKids grow fast, no time to go to the bazaar, hard to balance price and quality
DesiresNatural fabrics, delivery, easy exchanges
Objections"Will the size fit?", "Is it really cotton?"

Where to learn pains and desires

  • Interviews with 5–10 customers — see collecting customer feedback for how to run them.
  • Sales managers: what customers ask most often.
  • Conversations in comments and DMs.
  • Reviews of competitors — see competitor analysis.
  • Follower insights in the Instagram professional dashboard: age, gender, cities.
  • CRM data: who buys more and comes back.

Using the persona in ads

  • Creative: show the customer's situation and pain — our article on types of video ads helps you pick a format.
  • Copy: use the customer's own words and answer objections up front.
  • Settings: location, age and interests; build a lookalike audience from your buyer list.
  • One ad per segment: the same ad won't work for people moving house and for offices.

A precise creative also helps the algorithm find the right people: the system shows the ad to people similar to those who responded. For setup basics, see how to set up Instagram ads.

Conclusion

A persona isn't a one-off document: update it every six months with new data. A product "for everyone" is the most common mistake new entrepreneurs make; the rest are in our article on 7 marketing mistakes.
