Car dealership marketing: a plan from interest to test drive and sale

A car is one of a family's most expensive purchases, so dealership marketing doesn't run on one-day promotions. Buyers choose a model over weeks, sometimes months: they watch reviews, compare prices, ask friends, and only then visit the showroom. This article sets out a system for a dealership in Tashkent: from interest to test drive, and from test drive to sale.

The buyer's path: 5 stages

The buyer's path: 5 stages

StageWhat the buyer doesMarketing's job
InterestThinks "we need a new car"Show the model, be remembered
ChoiceCompares 2–3 modelsReviews, comparisons, prices and terms
Pre-decisionAsks about price, loans, trade-inA fast, precise answer and a test drive invitation

Many dealers spend only on stage one — pretty videos — and leave the rest empty. The result: plenty of leads, few test drives. How to map this path — see customer journey map.

Step 1. Content that answers buyers' questions

Car buyers look for information. The most useful content:

  • Video review — interior and exterior, boot, rear seats, infotainment, explained by a salesperson.
  • Comparisons — "Two trims: what's the difference?", "Which suits the city?".
  • Real questions — fuel use, service costs, parts, warranty. People ask these in DMs every day — turn the answers into videos.
  • In stock — which colours and trims are available now, updated in a Telegram channel.
  • Customers — a family collecting their car (with consent). The strongest trust signal there is.

YouTube suits long reviews; Reels and Shorts suit short ones. Using YouTube for business — YouTube for business; expert formats — expert interview videos.

Many mistakes in car sales involve price. Uzbekistan's Advertising Law bans showing prices in foreign currency in ads — the price in an ad must be in UZS. If you advertise instalments or loans, state the main terms openly and as readably as the headline: a big "monthly payment from…" with a tiny "50% down payment" at the bottom may count as misleading advertising.

More in advertising law in Uzbekistan and instalment advertising rules. This is not legal advice — in complex cases, consult a lawyer.

Step 3. Paid ads and lead forms

The goal of dealership ads is not likes but test drive bookings or requests about price and loans. A scheme that works:

  1. Interest: a model video to a broad audience.
  2. Retargeting: to people who watched the video or visited the profile — a concrete offer: test drive, trade-in valuation, instalment terms.
  3. Request: an Instant form (name, phone, model, convenient time) or a DM.

Instant forms bring more leads, sometimes of lower quality; messages bring fewer but warmer ones. Which to choose — lead form or messages. Add one qualifying question: "When do you plan to buy: this month / within 3 months / not sure yet".

Google and Yandex search matter too: someone searching "[model] price Tashkent" or "[model] loan" is a ready buyer. Choosing a platform — Google Ads vs Meta Ads.

Step 4. Handling leads — where most money is lost

A dealership lead is won or lost in the first hour. Buyers write to 2–3 dealers at once and talk to whoever gives a clear answer first. A standard:

StepDeadline
First call or replyWithin 15 minutes during working hours
Price, availability, termsIn the first conversation
A specific test drive timeAt the end of the first conversation
ReminderThe day before and 2 hours before the test drive
Follow-upWithin 24 hours after the test drive

Every lead goes into the CRM: source, model, stage, next step date. Which CRM fits — CRM for small business; reply speed — lead response time; conversation structure — sales script.

Step 5. The test drive is the heart of the sale

Step 5. The test drive is the heart of the sale

On a test drive, experience matters: the car is clean and fuelled, the manager meets the buyer on time, the route is planned (city and highway). It ends with a concrete next step: paperwork, a loan calculation or a trade-in valuation. Call those who said "I'll think about it" within 24 hours and address their doubts.

Step 6. Trade-in and loans make buying easier

Many buyers stall on how to sell their old car and fund the new one. Advertise trade-in valuation and loan/instalment calculations as separate offers: "We'll value your car in 30 minutes". That removes the biggest barrier.

Step 7. After the purchase

The relationship doesn't end with the sale:

  • a hand-over ceremony — photos and video (with consent), which become your next content;
  • a reminder about the first service;
  • a review request — on maps and social media;
  • a bonus for referring a friend (service or accessories).

How to value repeat business and referrals — repeat sales and LTV.

Which numbers to track

  • leads and cost per lead by source;
  • lead-to-test-drive conversion;
  • test-drive-to-sale conversion;
  • marketing spend per sale;
  • average time to first response.

Illustrative example: 400 leads a month, 80 came for a test drive (20%), 16 bought (20% of test drives). Raise test drive attendance to 30% and the same ads produce 24 sales. Improving lead handling is often cheaper than improving ads.

Common mistakes

Common mistakes

  • Prices in dollars in ads — this breaks the law.
  • Only pretty videos, with no price, availability or terms.
  • Replying to leads the next day.
  • No follow-up call after the test drive.
  • Ad, sales and CRM data kept separately — nobody knows which channel produced a sale.

Questions and answers

Which channel is best for a dealership?

One channel isn't enough: video content and Meta ads build interest, search ads catch ready buyers, a Telegram channel shows cars in stock. Compare results by sales.

Do I have to show the price in ads?

If you do, show it in UZS. It can be "from…" or per trim. Ads without prices do bring leads, but many end with a price question.

What if lead form leads are poor quality?

Add a qualifying question, choose the "higher intent" form type and send data on good leads back from the CRM so ads optimise for them.

How soon will results show?

Leads arrive in the first days, but buying a car is a long decision. You need at least 2–3 months of data for stable numbers.

Conclusion

Dealership marketing means covering every stage of a long buyer journey: useful content, lawful prices and terms, fast replies, a good test drive and contact after the sale. The biggest growth often comes not from ads but from how leads are handled. Level Marketing shoots video reviews for car businesses, connects ads to the CRM and shows lead-to-sale numbers every month.
