Unique selling proposition (USP): how to stand out from competitors

If customers can't see the difference between you and a competitor, they compare only price — and pick the cheapest. A unique selling proposition (USP) is one concrete reason to choose you. Here is how to find your USP, phrase it and where to use it.

3 signs of a good USP

  1. It matters to the customer — it solves their problem or removes a fear.
  2. Competitors don't have it, or don't talk about it.
  3. It can be proven — with a number, a guarantee, a process or a result.

"Quality, fast and affordable" isn't a USP: everyone says it and nobody proves it.

How to find your USP: 4 steps

  1. List customers' pains. Ask your sales team: which questions and objections come up most? Why do people leave without buying?
  2. Analyse competitors. What do they promise, and what do they leave out? More in our competitor analysis article.
  3. List your strengths: speed, guarantees, specialisation, process, payment model, service.
  4. Find the overlap — something customers care about, competitors lack and you genuinely have.

Formulas

  • "[Result] in [time] — or [guarantee]".
  • "Only we [unique feature] for [audience]".
  • "[Product] for [segment] with [main benefit]".

Examples

BusinessUSP
Furniture"A sofa in your size in 10 days — if we're late, delivery is free"
Clinic"The price of every treatment stage fixed in the contract upfront"
Education centre"Don't like it in the first two weeks? We refund you"
Real estate"A 3-year interest-free instalment plan"

The last example comes from our Global Avenue case, where that offer became the core of the campaign. In the Chorsu Gold Center case, a 5-year interest-free instalment plan did the job.

Important: a USP must be true and delivered. A broken promise hurts a brand more than no advertising at all.

Where to use your USP

  • In your Instagram bio and pinned posts.
  • In the first line of ads and the first seconds of videos.
  • On the first screen of your website or landing page.
  • In your sales script — managers should state it in every conversation.

Conclusion

A USP is your way out of price wars. Start with customers' pains, study competitors and choose one specific promise you can prove. For the other parts of a brand, see what a brand is.
