How to grow a Telegram channel from zero
A Telegram channel is the cheapest "own audience" a business can have: no algorithm cuts your reach, and every post goes straight to subscribers. But starting from zero and getting the first subscribers is hard. Here is how to build a channel, where to find the first 1,000 subscribers and how to turn them into customers.
The channel's foundation
Before any advertising, the channel needs to be ready:
- Clear positioning. Who it's for and what value it gives: "Renovation tips and prices in Tashkent", "IELTS prep: one lesson a day".
- Name and avatar. A clear name people can find in search.
- Description. One sentence on why to subscribe, plus one contact.
- A pinned post. Who you are, what you offer and how to order.
- At least 10–15 useful posts — so newcomers don't leave an empty channel.
Content: what to post
| Format | Why |
|---|---|
| Useful post (text + image) | Saves and trust |
| Video message (circle) | A face and live contact |
| Poll | Engagement and audience insight |
| Process and results | Proof |
| Offer | Sales |
Consistency matters: for example, one post a day or 4–5 a week — but always at the same rhythm.
Where to get the first 1,000 subscribers
- Your own base. Customers, Instagram followers, links in Stories and your profile bio.
- Ads in channels. Paid posts in topic channels — how to choose and measure them in our Telegram advertising article.
- Cross-promotion. Swaps with channels that share your audience but aren't competitors.
- A lead magnet. "Subscribe and get a free checklist" — a useful file or guide.
- Offline. A QR code in your office, on packaging, on receipts.
- Your website. A button that leads to Telegram.
Turning subscribers into customers
- A clear offer and ordering instructions in the pinned post.
- A special discount or early access for subscribers.
- A bot or manager contact for orders and consultations.
- Regular proof: reviews, results, cases.
Which metrics to track
- Post views relative to subscribers — how alive the audience is.
- Joins and leaves — after which posts people leave.
- Link clicks and leads from the channel.
Common mistakes
- Buying subscribers — views don't grow, and both advertisers and algorithms can see it.
- Nothing but promotional posts.
- Posting without rhythm: every day for a week, then two weeks of silence.
Conclusion
A Telegram channel is your own media outlet. Build the foundation, post useful content consistently, attract subscribers from several sources and turn them into customers with a clear offer. For the overall channel map, see our internet marketing article.
