How to name a business: 8 rules
A name is the first word customers hear about you. A good name is memorable, easy to find and easy to recommend; a bad one needs explaining in every ad. Here are 8 rules for naming a business and the process to follow.
8 rules
- Short and easy to say. Uzbek, Russian and English speakers should all pronounce it the same way.
- A positive meaning in all three languages. Check it doesn't sound funny or negative in another language.
- Unique. Not similar to competitors' names — otherwise customers get confused.
- Not too narrow. "Chilanzar Sofas" gets in the way if you expand.
- The domain and social handles are free. Check the .uz domain, Instagram and Telegram.
- A trademark check. Search the Intellectual Property Agency's register for similar marks and register your own.
- Easy to spell. Avoid Latin/Cyrillic confusion: o‘, g‘, sh and ch may be typed differently in searches.
- Test it on customers. Say it to 10 target customers and ask what they imagine.
Types of names
| Type | Example | Upside | Downside |
|---|---|---|---|
| Descriptive | "Tashkent Furniture" | Instantly clear | Doesn't stand out, hard to register |
| Invented | "Zentro" | Unique | Meaning needs explaining |
| Founder's name | "Karimov Clinic" | Trust, personality | Harder to sell or expand |
| Metaphor | "Level" | Memorable, meaningful | Hard to come up with |
The process
- 50 options — a free brainstorm.
- Narrow to 5 using the rules.
- Check the domain, social handles and trademark.
- Test with customers.
- Choose and register it straight away.
Common mistakes
- Choosing a name just because you like it.
- Making it similar to a competitor's name.
- Not registering a trademark — and risking losing the name.
- Foreign words that are hard to pronounce.
Conclusion
A good name is simple, unique, clear in three languages and legally protected. Check first, fall in love second. A name is only one part of a brand — for the rest, see what a brand is and visual identity.
